Admittedly there is little to no reason to buy needles from anywhere except directly from John James needles. Generally you want to start with

There are a few types of pins. The two important ones are glass headed and dressmakers.

Dressmakers pins are thinner and sharper. They are less likely to leave marks in fine cloth and less likely to damage the weave because it won’t pull or push, just move through.

Glass headed pins are more visible in garments. Making it less likely that the pin will get lost or left in a garment (I have seen two garments, completely unrelated to each other, two different makers, years old with a pin still in them) Good for using in fittings for that reason.
