Basting thread has two main uses in tailoring. First is the temporary joining of seams and sewing cloth before the permanent machine or handstitch is sewn. Second is mark-stitching. Sewing between two layers of cloth in order to transfer pattern details from the chalk lines to both sides of a garment that will most reliably and accurately make sure both sides of a garment are mirror images. The mark stitch is so prevalent because of the inlay in tailored cloths that allows for immediate and future alterations if a piece of clothing needs to be made bigger or smaller.
